Our History and Commitment

From a river valley in Appalachian Ohio to the global stage: One hundred years of hands-on education, practical experience, and intellectual exploration at the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism.

From an early start in 1923 when Raymond Slutz offered the first the University’s first journalism classes to today, Ohio University continues the trajectory as one of the finest Schools of Journalism in the United States.

At the heart of the success the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism is committed to providing an education that emphasizes professional excellencecritical thinking, and social responsibility. Through a blend of hands-on educationpractical experience, and intellectual exploration, we teach journalism in a way that it can be applied to many professions and to a rewarding life in a multicultural and fast-changing world.

Whether it's telling a storybuilding a brand, or engaging in research, we prepare students for their chosen professions now and those they end up in down the road — including jobs that may not even yet exist in our ever-changing media landscape.

The academic rigor coupled with hand-on experiential learning, and an unmatched network of opportunity continues to catapult our graduates from their first days on the bricks to landing leading journalistic roles across the country.

Your Support will Make a Mark

Help support the next 100 years of excellence.

This year, we have recognized the past 100 years by celebrating our Pulitzer Prize winners, recent graduates, war correspondents, and all of our alumni who have made their mark on the journalism profession. As we look ahead to the next 100 years, we are encouraging gifts to three funds that provide invaluable support for our students pursuing their own noteworthy paths. If your education and experience left a mark, please consider doing the same for future OHIO journalism graduates.

Please consider a gift of $100 or more to mark our 100 years of excellence.

E.W. Scripps School of Journalism fund. Provides essential support for the School of Journalism by funding initiatives such as student and faculty research and travel, experiential learning, bringing top-level industry experts to campus, new technology, and other enhancements to teaching and learning.

Scripps Future of Journalism Scholarship. Dr. Penny Shelton and Dr. Robert Stewart created this scholarship in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the School of Journalism.  Their goal is to encourage others to join them in building a legacy of scholarship support to ensure a top-quality education for future journalists. Gifts to this fund qualify for University matching funds of $0.50 on the dollar as part of the OHIO Match program.
